Method

Step one

PREPARE THE EGGSHELL POWDER>>

1/ Wash the eggshells and boil them for 5 minutes.

2/ In order to remove all remaining waste, put them in a colander and wash.

3/ Dry the eggshells - put in an oven tray and heat for 15 minutes at low temperature (100ºC).

4/ Grind the eggshells into a powder.

5/ Sieve the ground eggshells to obtain a fine powder.

Step two

PREPARE THE BINDER: Xanthan gum: The gum is generated in the process when the xanthan powder is mixed with water.

The water : xanthan ratio is 1:0.04 (100g to 4g)>>

1/ Measure the desired amount of xanthan powder.

2/ Measure the desired amount of water. (Distilled water is recommended)

3/ Add xanthan powder to the water and stir until it starts to thicken. To completely dissolve the lumps that are formed at the beginning, use a mixer or wait longer.

Step three

PREPARE THE PASTE. The powder : binder ratio is 1:0.4 (100g to 40g)>>

1/ Measure the amount of eggshell powder you want to use.

2/ Add binder to the powder until the right ratio is met.

3/ Stir until both ingredients are well mixed into a smooth paste.

Step four

3D PRINTING>>

1/ Fill the extruder container with the paste (we used a 150 ml syringe). It’s important to avoid air bubbles when you put the mixture into the container.

2/ Printing specifications: - Layer height: 2mm - Speed: 25 mm/second - Pressure: 0.08 bar

3/ Store the object at room temperature until it’s completely dry.
