Method

Step one

  • Wash the pink dragon fruit peels very well. Sometimes the pink flesh of the fruit remains on the peels as it is quite difficult to get rid of.

  • Set aside the peel to dry or dab dry.

Step two

  • Add the dragon fruit peels in a saucepan.

  • Add the water. This can be cold or preheated. You could even try using filtered water to see if that will change the result to the final mixture.

Step three

  • Cover with a lid and cook the water in the pan for 10 minutes.

  • Try not to remove the lid if possible.

Step four

  • Strain or sieve the mixture into a jar. This produced 500ml of natural dye.

  • You can use the dye straight away. Or store the dye in a clean jar. You can keep this in the fridge, if you don’t want to use it straight away.

  • You can either dispose of the peels if you don’t want to keep them or wash them and set aside to use for other experiments.
