About CSM BA Textile Design

BA Textile Design is situated within the Jewellery, Textiles and Materials Programme at Central Saint Martins (CSM), University of the Arts London (UAL).

The Course introduces students to broad based design and making skills alongside digital and non-traditional approaches to textile design. The course includes three main textile practices: print, knit and weave and students have the opportunity to try out all three subjects in their first year before specialising in one area in year 2.

As part of the annual Material Futures project, second year textile design students were asked to develop design concepts for a community garden in London, during spring 2020 and 2021.

The aim of this project was to imagine and develop innovative and sustainable textiles, surfaces and structures to give a new material dimension to the Story Garden at St Pancras and develop sensorial urban fabric ideas. The visual, environmental and cultural identity of the location well as the surrounding community formed the inspiration for the material developments shared on this website. As part of the collaboration with Materiom students looked into local natural waste materials and its circular design potential.

Students attended a Materiom workshop run by visiting lecturer Zoe Powell Best and they have experimented with ingredients relevant to their Story Garden design proposals. The results of their bio textile recipes are shared here.
